Darshan

M is absorbed in a book and she tells me something about it now and then. I like it when she is talking to me – when she reads I doze beside her and sometimes I pay attention to what she is saying. This book apparently is about walking. That is no surprise to me: she likes walking and when she doesn’t walk she likes to read about walking. I have the same, in a way: I like eating and running and when I don’t eat or run I like to dream about it. That and walking exciting paths.

Anyway, this book about walking is not just about the movement itself or interesting paths, it is about the philosophy of walking too. Yesterday M told me something interesting she had read. It is about darshan. That is a word in the Sanskrit language and it means seeing a divine vision. The writer of the book (check the tags down this blog for his name, M does the tags, I do not bother about them) walks in the Himalayas and sees this wonderful mountain. It is so astonishingly beautiful that it feels like a sacred place. That is what darshan means, he writes.

I have been wondering about this. M told me it is not just about seeing something divine, but about feeling it too. I do not sense much difference between that, because for us canines seeing is feeling is hearing is smelling…. well, maybe you know what I mean. For us it all comes together in one experience. I do know the feeling of darshan. It is exactly like this writer says: I feel it when I am near something beautiful. Or, better: in something beautiful. Like a magical green forest:

Lush green woods

Or in the mountains. Especially mountains, I guess they have a lot of darshan:

Mountain bliss

But near our home I have this experience too, now and then. Mostly when we are near or on the beach and the ocean is vast and smooth under a silver sky:

I wonder: could there be darshan in food, too? It feels wonderful to see juicy food and know one will get it. But that is another feeling than I have in the mountains. So maybe that is not darshan, but something else. I wonder if the book says something about that, too. I will pay attention to what M is telling me these days…

Party time!

Yesterday M and P and I had a little party, all by ourselves. I am not sure why, but that doesn’t matter I guess. Maybe it was because M’s second thriller has been published this week. Anyway: they opened a special bottle for this occasion. I really like these kind of bottles, because they have this thing that goes flying high into the air.

P opened the bottle and I followed the orbit of the thing:

Than I searched for it and found it at the back of the garden. It is wonderful stuff to play with, so I did:

I chewed on it and threw it in the air and tossed it around with my paws. Than I offered it to M and P, so they could play with it too.

But they did not want it, because they were too busy with the contents of the bottle. Strange. Sometimes I do not understand humans.

How to become a blogger

A dog I met on the beach asked me how she can be a successful blogger, just like me. She was not the first dog to ask me, so I decided to write a post on how to become a blogger.

It is not very difficult, you know. Anyone can do it! There are a few elements for a successful blog. First the technical stuff. That is easy: just start a blog at WordPress, like this one. Or with another company that offers this service. Add some nice pictures to it, I am sure you already have loads of them. If not, ask your human. Humans tend to take pictures of everything they love, which means: you.

What is most important for a successful blog is the content. That is why readers will come to your blog, because you have something to tell them! It can be anything. Your musings on interesting topics like foxes, funny stories about your friends and – my favorite – stories about your adventures.  It is good to have adventures often, so you can share them with your readers! Of course you are already searching for fun experiences, because they give you joy. Now you have another reason to do so, because you can blog about them. What a splendid reason to go searching for fun things!

The next thing of course is the writing. Do not get too nervous about that. Hey, you are a dog, nobody will expect your writing to be flawless. I’ve discovered that the blogging community is a huge, friendly pack of likeminded creatures, who love to read and write and share their adventures. Your dog readers won’t mind some mistakes, if they’ll even notice, and your human readers will think it astonishing that you can write anyway. They do not suspect dogs can write,  humans can be so narrow minded…. Your readers will like your blog regardless of some mistakes now and then, so no worries about that. Just start writing and see how far you’ll get.

You will need access to one of these luminous devices humans call computers. If your human supports your blogging ambitions you can use his/hers. If she/he is not: wait until you are home alone. Being a narrow minded human they will never think you use their computer – when they find out is has been used they will probably blame the kids or their partner. You just need to put on your ‘it-wasn’t-me-face’ in case they look at you. I am sure you are very good at that face, every dog is.

I will tell all this to the dog who asked me on the beach. She is a labrador, so she will probably want to start a food blog. That should be fun to read! It won’t have many items on how to prepare fancy dishes, I guess, because labs tend to wolf down anything that is even remotely edible. But you never know. She might surprise us. Happy blogging to her!

A beautiful morning

Today is a beautiful day in Holland. There is sunshine, white clouds, grey clouds and showers and a little bit of wind. I like that, it is adventurous weather! But not too adventurous, not the kind of weather that tosses my ears and makes my fur stand up in the wind. I like that weather too, but it is more tiring. Weather like this:

Kind of wet

So the weather today is fine and so is the morning. I am not a morning person, I told you before, but that does not mean I do not like to go out in the morning. I love to go out in the morning, to do a lazy walk, sniff the air, enjoy the wet grass under my slender feet. I am totally happy, I just do not feel like playing with other dogs in the morning, that’s all.

Just in front of our house is a nice area with water and grass and little trees, where I can stroll at leasure. Sometimes I chase ducks and then I run, but most of the times I just potter around, investigating.

On the lookout

Like I did this morning. When we came back we had breakfast and now I am snoozing in my favorite chair. We will go on a longer walk later in the day, I am sure. M is busy writing a new story, a thriller for another customer, the second one she is writing. She is happy and so am I. Although I would never want to write a book, it is way too long and therefore too much work. Blogging is perfect for me.

One hundred fans!

One hundred humans and dogs are following my blog. Wow. As a dog I am not very good at numbers, but I do know that one hundred is a lot. And even more read it when they wander along the internet!

It makes me kind of shy. One hundred, that is… an enormous pile of cookies! A field full of rabbits! A trail of sausages as long as the street I live in! I think it is great so many humans and dogs – and maybe, ahum, some cats too, although I really would not like to know how many precisely – read my musings. I hope I make them laugh a lot and cry a little. I also hope that my posts make humans realize how we dogs really are. So they can enjoy life more, with full appreciation of the love we canines give them.

The most important thing I have to say to all my readers right now, human and canine, is: THANK YOU!!! You make blogging a true Adventure.

Salty air

Yesterday AND the day before M was so busy that she did not have time to walk with me! She has been looking at this luminous device for hours on end. While outside the sun was shining! Jeez. What is it with humans that they can’t get their priorities right?

I tried to get her attention, of course. I ran around the rooms, dragging Chuck with me. I jumped up and down in front of M. I made special noises to emphasize the importance of Going Out. It did not work. Until today. I am glad to say that we just returned from the beach, both M and I.

It was glorious, as usual. I ran and fetched balls and got my toes wet. M walked and breathed the healthy salty air. She told me we will go to the beach together again every day, from now on. I’ll remind her of that promise! Starting maybe… at seven in the morning, every morning? So she won’t forget.

By the way, this is what she was so busy with. M wrote a book, a thriller, for an organization. She is kind of proud about it, so I am too.

Happy blogger

When I started this weblog, it was mainly to share my opinions and tell you about my adventures. I thought it would be nice, but I never imagined it would be so much fun! It is wonderful to write, of course, to be able to create something. But it is even more wonderful to know you are reading it. To know humans and dogs (and maybe, although I hate the idea, some cats too) are enjoying my musings. Even in countries I have never visited, like Brazil, the United States and Angola!

Bubbles blogging

It adds an extra zest to my day, to have an adventure and think how I can write about it. Sometimes we meet humans who tell M they really like my blog, because it makes them smile. That is good! Happy humans are the best, because they are friendly and relaxed and more likely to give you yummy things than stressed humans.

So I am glad to have started this blog and I hope I will continue it for a long time. Thank you very much for reading it! You make me a happy blogger.
