Camping bliss

We went camping, again! Great! I can’t get enough of it, so I am very glad M likes it as much as I do. Do you know what I like most of it? Every time we go camping is an Adventure in itself, because one never knows what will happen. Last time we had fighting squirrels near the van, for instance. But even if there are no Adventures, I still love it. Because when we are camping we are doing my favorite things. Like sleeping late, together in one warm bed:

And hiking! We found some very pretty paths this time:

What is more: when we are camping I guard the van. I am very good at that. No one dares to come near to our van.

I may look cute, with my pretty ears and long nose, but make no mistake: I am a ferocious guarding dog. I really like sitting next to the van like this, watching the surroundings and staring meaningfully at humans, canines and squirrels that dare come too close. They keep their distance. Good. I love camping!

Tough weekend

I had a really tough weekend. There is a new and big responsibility pressing on my slender shoulders, as we say in Holland. M and P bought a new camper and this one is even nicer than the old one. It is my job to guard it, of course. I chase away every human, canine and squirrel that dares to come near our new van. This is it:

We just returned from a three day trip, our first in this new van. It was quite exciting. We made long walks through the woods and over dunes-without-sea (they puzzle me – where did all the water go?).

We even did a walk which apparently is especially for dogs. M pointed out to me that the signs are made for us:

I think this is very funny. We dogs do not need signs, we find our way through the woods easily! Ha, silly humans.

In the nights it became very cold, so I made sure I was warm enough. My coat is pretty and sleek, made for the heat of Greece (where I come from), not the coldness of the north. So I took the right measures to stay warm during the night.

I did not mind sharing my bed with M and P, I am a social dog.

It was a nice trip, but I am very tired now because I hardly slept. I had to guard the van, right? Although the campsite seemed deserted, this was not so. There were squirrels laughing in the trees, rabbits running about and even some chicken prying at our nice new camper. I gave them my special look, so they did not dare to come close.

An adventure for every dog

There is one more picture of our hike in Germany that I’d like to share with you. To me it makes clear how wonderful it is to be with your humans and have adventures together. Walking in a wood with trees this big was truly an adventure.

I wish all the dogs in the world can have adventures like this. Yes, also the little ones that get dressed up and are carried around in designer bags. Because no matter how tiny dogs are, they need adventures! Maybe you are reading this and you are such a dog. You want to go out on an adventure too, but you have to persuade your human. Because your human prefers shopping malls over woods, right? Well, you can tell her that for going on an adventure together you will need gear to survive in the woods. Like…. outdoor designer clothing! For her and for you! Which means more shopping, so she will definitely like that.

And then, after hours of shopping and preparation, you are finally out in those woods. You will have a happy walk and ignore the squirrels roaring with laughter about your fashionable canine outdoor gear. They are just dumb squirrels. Enjoy your adventure!

Gift: a hike!

Alas, I did not get the mountain cat I asked for on my birthday. Instead M and P gave me something else, which was pretty awesome too: a hike! We hiked for three days in Germany and it was really nice. The woods there are huge, with lots of mysterious paths.

I first thought my mountain cat was waiting for me there but nope, there were none. I did see some squirrels and a lot of birds. There was a myriad of smells for me to discover and nice views for M and P to enjoy.

Hiking1

We saw a lot of mushrooms, like these (not inhabited, they are too small for that):

Hiking3

And huge trees everywhere in the woods. Home to squirrels and unfortunately not very suitable for climbing by dogs (I should do something about that and get me some training on how to climb trees. It could be handy when chasing squirrels).

Hiking2

There were big trees in the little villages we visited too!

Hiking5

It smelled of autumn and a little bit of winter too, with a cold tinge in the air. I am glad we slept in hotels that were cosy and warm, so I could snooze in the sun while processing all the smells and sounds I gathered during the day.

Snoozing

I had a great birthday!

Hiking

We went hiking! We drove to a new place, a place I had never been before. We went to a house where we had our own room for the night. We sometimes do this and I always think it very odd, because there are lots of unfamiliar smells in these rooms. M puts my bed on the floor and my water and food bowls next to it and tells me this is our home for now, but it never feels like home to me. Anyway, I knew there was an Adventure ahead when they spread this on the bed:

Oh dear

It is a piece of paper and M looks at it a lot, when we are hiking. P does not, he has this black device where he looks at (a lot). The thing even talks to him, and sometimes P talks to it, too. There are certain things a dog will never understand and that is fine, I am learning as I am growing up.

So we hiked and it was nice. The woods are beautiful over there:

Beautiful woods

There were vast dunes, although no sea – for some reason all the water was gone:

In the dunes

We hiked past some houses along a quiet street. There was a traffic sign telling humans to take care and slow down, for the sake of dogs. How thoughtful!

How thoughtful

We had a great hike. The device that is talking to P showed us what we had walked. M and P really like this, so I will show it to you, for their sake. I personally think it is silly because this is not what we hiked: there is no smell and no taste and no sound to it and that is what makes a good hike.

What is even more silly: they use this device for navigation. But they don’t need navigation when they are with me! I will bring them back to our car or home anytime, they just need to tell me where they want to go. I never get lost. If I had known we were heading for our car, I would have brought them there immediately. But no, they had to figure it out themselves, with the help of the paper M carried and the device of P. That is why our hike ended up looking like this:

Our route

Not very effective, right? But well, it was a nice hike.

By the way, there was one disappointing thing: there were no squirrels, no matter how hard I looked.

Alert but no squirrels
