I’m back!

Hello there, I am back! M and P returned from their holiday and Nicoline brought me home. There were some interesting new smells in the house, coming from the luggage of M and P. I smelled lobster and sunshine. I really, really want to go with them next time, because lobster and sunshine are two of my favorite things! I can’t believe they enjoyed it without me.

But I won’t be cross for too long, because I had a good time with Nicoline. We were a huge pack, I was together with twelve other dogs! Some of them became my friends. I played a lot with Boss, a big mean German Shepherd Dog. He is still growing and getting stronger every day. I really like to challenge him. This is a picture of him, together with the older German Shepherd in our pack:

Boss

Boss is the one on the right. In this picture they were singing, I don’t have a clue why, it was absolutely horrible to hear. I bumped into Boss to stop him and he resumed playing with me.

Another dog I really like is Flynn. This is him:

He can give you a very odd look, as you can see. I discovered the right response to this look:

I had a good time, but I am glad to be back home. At least I have my own bed now (at Nicolines place we swop beds all the time), with my very own snoozebag. And I can blog again! Like I predicted, Nicoline did not allow me on the computer. She thinks dogs shouldn’t blog, tssss.

On the lookout

I am a guarding dog. Actually, I am a hunting dog, my ancestors were hunting dogs to the ancient Greek nobility. But I can guard too. It is absolutely necessary for any dog to do some guarding, you know. Even Bichons guard when the stakes are high. There are three subjects a dog has to guard: food, home and its human(s). This sounds easy, but it is not. Because, you see, all three of them come in different situations.

Food can be anywhere (luckily!): in your house, the car, the forest, the beach, you name it. Your human moves all the time, so you have to protect her in very different circumstances: at home, on the road, in a shop.  It takes a lot of skill to do this correctly. It can be a bit confusing, too. I for instance always protect M. When we go out, I am on the lookout for her, to see whether there is some danger about. If there is, I have to take measures, like leading her on another, safer path:

On the lookout

She appreciates me doing this. But sometimes she does not and that is the confusing part. When we go on a long walk M takes some food with her and we picnic along the road. This means double guarding duty for me: I have to protect food and my human. When a nasty man approaches us, I show my teeth and he backs off. This happened more than once and M was proud of me. But, and this is the confusing part, she was angry with me when we were in what she calls a bar and I did exactly the same thing to a guy approaching us. I still don’t get it. But maybe I will understand when I am a bit older. I could ask my friend Boet, she told me she has some bar experience.

The third very important subject to guard is home. This is not easy either, because a home can move. Like our home in the holidays. We are in a new spot almost every day and I have to work really hard, protecting it in new surroundings all the time:

Bubbles and bus

It can be very tiring. That is why I prefer guarding our house. It doesn’t move and I have an excellent spot for guarding: my favorite chair on the second floor. From there I have a good view of the front of the house, where most of the action is and where I suspect possible danger will come from (at the back of the house is our garden, only cats and pigeons there – very important, too, don’t get me wrong. But not concerning guarding):

On the lookout 2

I am very successful in guarding our house. Humans walk to our house, they see me and walk on. Easy! Occasionally someone walks to our door and rings the bell. Then M and I go downstairs, she opens the door and I stand right behind her, ready to attack in case the person calling is not friendly. I show my white, sheeny teeth, just to make sure. When required I add a firm, menacing growl (I learned a really convincing one from my German Shepherd friends).

Until now I did not have to bite anyone. Which frankly is a disappointment, because I wonder what nasty people taste like. Pigeon? Sausages? Socks? What do you think?

Snoozebag

I got a really nice present today. Winter is coming and it is getting colder, so M thought I might be cold in the nights. We all sleep in the same room and M and P like to keep this room cool. I don’t mind, but I do have to admit I am not very well suited for cold weather. You see, my coat is made for the country where I was born: Greece. My hairs are very short and on my tummy there is not enough of it to keep me warm. When we are out I run to keep myself warm, but when I am sleeping I cannot do that, of course.

So I like this present! It is a snoozebag and it was made especially for me. It is big enough for me to lie in. I am glad that M respected my taste in this and chose an elegant black-and-white motif, with a classy neutral grey on the outside. Like I told you before: one has to be stylish, always!

Snoozebag

Now I can sleep nice and warm. M told me she bought this from a lady who makes these snoozebags and donates the money to the foundation where I came from. That is a nice thought. I will sleep warm and my fellow former stray dogs in the shelter in Athens have something to eat and sleep on, too.

If you want a snoozebag too, just tell your human to go to this Facebooksite. If your human is not very receptive to your hints (some of them can have really big bananas in their ears!), just go to the Facebooksite yourself when your human is not around and keep the computer turned on, so he will see it when he comes home. That should do the trick. Good luck!

Home alone

This afternoon I am home alone. M and P are out, something to do with what they call working. I don’t know what they are doing, but I am fine with it, because they always return.

When I am home alone I usually lie in the chair on the second floor, from where I can oversee my street. It is a good spot for guarding. But today I don’t feel like guarding. This is one of these days when I am sooooooo sleepy. Do you ever have this? I just lie down and snooze all afternoon. I hope I’ll have some nice dreams.

So sleepy

My gentleman friend

I’d like you to meet Fred, my gentleman friend. He lives in the street behind us, that is how we know each other. He is a true gentleman and a full blood whippet. He walks in a graceful way and when he sees me, he gets so happy it looks as if he dances. He is kindhearted and very sensitive – one growl from another dog can make him wonder for days what he did to deserve it.

When I am with him, he lets me sleep on his bed and play with his toys – he has furry squeaky toys,  I love them. M won’t buy them for me because she says I would rip them apart. Well, yes, I would. That is what they are for!

When I was little, I shared my bed with Fred:

Me and Fred

I don’t do that anymore, of course, I am almost grown up! But we do go out together, sometimes. We like sniffing the air for cats and squirrels. Like me, he is super fast. M keeps us on a leash when we are out together, so unfortunately so far we never had the change to test which one of us is faster.

Fred and me outside

I think I am the fastest, but I am not entirely sure about this. Fred is bred for the races, you know, so he could be a tiny bit faster than I.

The best beach

Hurray, I am home and the beach is still here! We went there today, I ran next to our cargobike. The path to the beach is nice too, it is lined with lots of smells (rabbits! rabbit shit! foxes!). This is what the path looks like – and me running next to the bike:

Then we take a sharp turn to the right and we park the bike, overlooking the sea. The leash is off and I am off! Off to the beach:

Today it was very quiet, there weren’t a lot of other dogs to play with, alas. But M and P threw ball for me, which was great. I love this beach. I think it is the best beach in the world. What is your favorite beach?
