Camping bliss

We went camping, again! Great! I can’t get enough of it, so I am very glad M likes it as much as I do. Do you know what I like most of it? Every time we go camping is an Adventure in itself, because one never knows what will happen. Last time we had fighting squirrels near the van, for instance. But even if there are no Adventures, I still love it. Because when we are camping we are doing my favorite things. Like sleeping late, together in one warm bed:

And hiking! We found some very pretty paths this time:

What is more: when we are camping I guard the van. I am very good at that. No one dares to come near to our van.

I may look cute, with my pretty ears and long nose, but make no mistake: I am a ferocious guarding dog. I really like sitting next to the van like this, watching the surroundings and staring meaningfully at humans, canines and squirrels that dare come too close. They keep their distance. Good. I love camping!

Path-finder

I am a path-finder, a way-finder. No matter where we are, in Holland or in the mountains in a far away place: I always know the way back. Back home, or the way back to our campervan, which is home too. I do not know why I can do this – it is typically human to ask a thing like that. I just do it. It comes natural to me.

This skill is not always needed, because sometimes the paths are so obvious that even M can find them:

But sometimes we walk in the woods or the mountains or along the coast somewhere and the paths are pretty hard to find. Sometimes there are no proper paths, only tracks made by wild animals. I find these easily, too. I lead M along the way, so we will go safely back to wherever our home is.

Long walk

We just returned from a long walk, M and I and W. W is M’s mother. She likes walking as much as M and I, so sometimes we go together! That’s nice. I like her, she gives me cookies.

We walked on the beach and through the dunes. It was sunny and quiet, we almost had a private beach!

The beach is great for running and chasing birds. Which I did, of course. After some hours we went into the dunes, rabbit country!

Long walk 1

But the rabbits were skinny, so I did not catch them. Besides I wanted to save my energy. When we go for a walk and M has her hiking gear with her (a big lumpy thing on her back with loads of stuff in it, like my food and my bed) one never knows when one will return home. I was right in saving my energy: this particular walk turned out to be a two day walk.

On the second day we spotted some very interesting wildlife:Long walk 5

I did want to chase that one, but M stopped me. Not fair! When we walked on I used my sharp eyes and nose even more than usual to spot these big juicy animals. But alas, they were all hiding from me. They must be very clever.

Long walk 2

For the last stage of our long walk we walked on the beach again.

Long walk 3

It was a nice walk. Now I will sleep for half a day and then we can go again!

Gift: a hike!

Alas, I did not get the mountain cat I asked for on my birthday. Instead M and P gave me something else, which was pretty awesome too: a hike! We hiked for three days in Germany and it was really nice. The woods there are huge, with lots of mysterious paths.

Hiking4

I first thought my mountain cat was waiting for me there but nope, there were none. I did see some squirrels and a lot of birds. There was a myriad of smells for me to discover and nice views for M and P to enjoy.

Hiking1

We saw a lot of mushrooms, like these (not inhabited, they are too small for that):

Hiking3

And huge trees everywhere in the woods. Home to squirrels and unfortunately not very suitable for climbing by dogs (I should do something about that and get me some training on how to climb trees. It could be handy when chasing squirrels).

Hiking2

There were big trees in the little villages we visited too!

Hiking5

It smelled of autumn and a little bit of winter too, with a cold tinge in the air. I am glad we slept in hotels that were cosy and warm, so I could snooze in the sun while processing all the smells and sounds I gathered during the day.

Snoozing

I had a great birthday!

A three day hike

Last time I told you I was probably up to a new Adventure and I was right! We went on a three day hike. We started at our house and went to the sea. There was a thick mist which made the surroundings a bit mysterious for M and P. Not for me, I use my nose and ears as much as I use my eyes. I knew exactly where we were going.

Hike1

We went to the beach and I ran to keep myself warm – and because I was happy, because it looked like we were going on a long hike. M and P had these packs on their backs, which usually is good news. It means we are going to walk for hours. We had lunch at a beach club and then continued our hike through the dunes. The mist cleared and it became sunny.

Hike2

Then we went to the beach again. I ran some more, rolled in smelly sea food (no good for eating anymore, but fabulous for perfuming your body) and I met other dogs, whom I greeted politely.

Hike3

It became a bit tricky when the tide came in. I had to help P cross the ocean:

Hike4

Then we sat down again at another beach club and I finally could take a nap.

Hike5

While M and P enjoyed this. I don’t know what it is, but they drink it al lot so I guess they like it:

Hike6

After my nap we walked just a little further to our hotel. It was a cosy place, where I discovered that M and P had not taken my snoozebag with them, but some flimsy blanket to lie on. I was very disappointed when I found out. So I decided to snooze on the bed. I am not allowed on the bed, but when I keep my hind legs on the floor it is not really lying on the bed, is it?

Hike7

In the end, I did sleep on the flimsy blanket. Too bad. The next day, we started out on the beach again. I found a huge stick!

Hike8

Like the day before, we walked on the beach and in the dunes. It was nice, although a bit cold with a strong wind blowing from the sea.

Hike9

We went to a new place and stayed in a different hotel. This morning we started from there. It was nice and sunny.

Hike10

We went along the beach for a short while, then walked to the dunes and into the woods. I was off leash most of the time, so I could run and sniff around. I smelled rabbits and deer and cyclists.

Hike11

Then the landscape changed. There were more houses and traffic and noise and I knew we were entering a city. A nice city though, with lots of tasty fat ducks in the little canals.

Hike12

From there we took one of those swoooish things called trains and we went back home. It was amazing how fast we were home again. It was still there and I was lucky, because the sun was shining on my favorite chair. So I stretched my long legs and dozed in the sun, for the rest of the day. This was an Adventure.
