Tail

In some ways humans are better off than canines. They can always walk off leash, for instance. But if one takes a holistic point of view, canines have the most benefits. We are the ones with the happy simple lives: we guard, play and eat when we want and sleep the rest of the time. Much better than humans, who seem to be in a hurry all the time doing… yes, what exactly? I don’t know. Working, M tells me. Working for what, when they already have a house and plenty of food?

When it comes to physical differences canines are much better off than humans, too. Humans seem to navigate on one sense only: eyesight. Canines have sharp eyes, but also extraordinary hearing and smelling capabilities. Not to mention our seventh sense, which enables us to feel trouble that is coming to us (like a bad mannered dog in the dog park). We have wonderful warm fur (no clothes needed), pretty ears and, best of all: a tail. Humans do not have a tail. And that is very sad for them. With a tail, you see, one can do so many things.

Like using it as a counterweight when something asks for thorough nose-investigation.

It is also a clear tool for communication, as you can see: my friend near the water signals me she is ready for playing and I answer her with my tail in the same position. The game is on, friend!

The tail high up means: I am stronger than you are, try me! It is also a signal of extreme alertness – I put my tail up high when I smell a burglar, or a cat. By the way: in the above picture my friends were not really fighting, they were just testing one another’s strength. The dog in the back thought it pretty silly, as you can see.

A tail is a real asset. It is sad humans do not have one.

Subtle ways of getting what you want

In the last four years I have developed sophisticated ways of telling humans what I want. One has to do that, because humans tend to miss the most important things around them. They for instance focus on one thing when the action is elsewhere.

So to make sure they do not miss what I want, I developed The Method. When humans are eating something delicious, I have a subtle way of letting them know I want to eat it too:

Something else I developed over time is a method for making sure I go with them when they leave the house. Usually I don’t mind being alone in the house, it gives me an opportunity to doze in the sun undisturbed. But sometimes I do very much want to go with M and P. So when they start putting their coats on, I do this. Now it is impossible to pass me, obviously, so they will have to take me with them:

With canines, of course, one does not need this kind of method. We sense what another dog wants and give it – or not. Although some dogs are amazingly incapable of sensing another dog’s intentions. With them there is only one approach to get the message through.

One lucky dog – a listicle

I am a lucky dog. You know why? I made a list of all the things that make me so lucky:

I could have been a poor and skinny stray dog in Greece, but I became a wealthy city dog. Because some loving humans organized for me and my friends to come to Holland and they got us adopted. This is me, 5 months old and new in Holland. Cute, hey? No wonder M and P adopted me on the spot!

I get lots of yummy food, sometimes really fancy stuff:

I have nice soft warm beds on every floor in our house:

We have this as our backyard:

And this (when you take the other turn):

I do all sorts of fun stuff. Like (when M isn’t looking) fooling around with little dogs. I like to surprise them, so they start running and I can chase them! They are always very impressed by my approach.

I have exiting Adventures with my humans, M and P. We travel!

I have loads of friends:

On top of all that, I have my own blog! Which you are reading now. Thank you for that!
I wonder: what makes you happy? Can you tell me?

Back home

I am home again. No more mountains for walking, but the vast beach for running!

I met some new friends and we ran together. I like that!

The holiday was grand, traveling through Europe and hiking in the mountains and vineyards of Italy, Germany and France. I had a great time and so did M and P. But it is good to be back home again. I do like going on holiday and having Adventures abroad. But if I am very honest about holidays: the part I like best is coming back home. And finding that the beach is still here, and all my soft beds and my favorite viewpoint from our house.

Old lady

I had the pleasure of seeing my old friend again, movie star Hester. It has been a while since I saw her – she is very old and doesn’t go to the beach anymore. But yesterday she had a good day and we went to the woods together. She still looks gorgeous, by the way.

It was fun. The sun was shining and Hester pottered around happily, sniffing here and there. I was actively investigating our surroundings, in case there was a squirrel passing by or a dangerous dog approaching. Nothing of the kind happened. We just had a happy walk.

Which is a good thing, especially with old friends.

Dog talk

In my previous post I mentioned that I had a serious conversation with my friend, Jip. This is what it looked like:

Talking it through

Some of my friends who weren’t there when this happened ask me what this was all about. What were we saying? Well, it was something like this:

“You are a mean bitch!”
You are a mean bitch!”
“Yes I am!”
“Me too!”
“You are right, you are a mean bitch!”
“Ha! We both are mean bitches!”
“Hell yeah.”
“We are two mean bitches!”
“Yeah!”
“Okay. That’s settled, then.”
“Yes it is.”
“Now what?”
“Let’s have some fun!”

And that is what we had, with the rest of our pack:

My all-inclusive holiday

I am back! I had a wonderful holiday with Nicoline and her pack of bandidos. The holiday was all-inclusive: food, snacks, beverages, a cosy place to sleep, a full activity program and lots of friends – all arranged for me! Awesome.

We went to the beach for hours:

I made new friends:

And settled old grudges with old friends:

No, I am not kidding, we are truly friends! We just needed to talk something through. Thoroughly.

Talking it through

After that, we had great fun together.

It was a very nice holiday. But I am glad to be back home with M and P. I have time to blog again! I hope you all had a good beginning of the new year as well. For me, this must become a wonderful year, starting this way.
