We moved again and now we are in Austria! There are still mountains here, which is great. I love mountains. We walk a lot and on one of these walks we passed the Italian border, M told me. So we went to Italy and back in one minute. This is M, standing on what is called a border stone. The Ö means that side is Austria, on the other side there was an I (this doesn’t make sense to me, but apparently humans understand).
Anyway, I don’t care about borders, but I am interested in the culinary traditions of the countries I visit. Italy is pizza country, as everyone knows. Croatia is squid territory, in Slovenia I tasted delicious ham and sausages and Austria turns out to be cheese country! M and P bought a lot of cheese in a little village we visited and they shared it with me. I think I really like this country, too!
We travelled a bit farther and now we are in another country, M says it is called Croatia. I was a bit sad when we left pizza country, but it turns out they have pizza here, too! And a lot of other, also very tasteful stuff. M tells me the region we are in now is Istria and Istria is known for its splendid food. Like game, cheese and truffles. And raw ham, a bit like the ham they have in Italy. It tastes wonderful, I can tell you. This is what I ate yesterday:
All right, I’ll be honest: it is what M ate. But I got a big part of it! It is cheese with truffles, truffle spread on bread and prsut, the Istrian ham. Delicious.
Truffles are a kind of mushroom and they grow underground. Here they have special dogs to find them. I met some of them today, when we were taking a walk. They are trained to find truffles, which isn’t too hard because you can smell a truffle from miles afar. At least, I can and so do these dogs. Did you ever smell a truffle? Not a very subtle odor, you must agree. Anyway, these dogs find the truffles for their humans, just like hunting dogs find game. Only truffles don’t run away, so it is much easier to do.
The walk we made was nice. The town where we are now is very old. It smells of cats and humans and truffles.
Did you see the Oscars this weekend? We did and I am very happy a movie with a dog won one of these yellow statues. Of course we watched the trailer of this movie, called Feast. My oh my it is awesome.
There are several really cool things in this movie. First: the star is a dog, a very cute one, but can you see what kind of dog it is? It is a Pittbull! I am positive about this. I think it is great they chose this breed, since it is very wrongly known as a scary breed by ignorant humans. Now everyone can see they are not scary at all!
The second cool thing is the storyline. It is all about food. This dog eats all the time! And absolutely yummy things, too. I had to replay the trailer several times to note it all. It is so much. It gets tacos (with cheese!!!), pizza, spaghetti with meatballs… it is mouth watering to look at. I must admit I dreamt of it all night. I had delicious dreams about huge piles of pizza, all for me, and a swimming pool full of spaghetti with meatballs bubbling on the surface. I just had to plunge into the pool to eat them!
There is one major thing that can be improved in this movie, though. It is an animation. They should make a real movie, with a real dog. Then they will surely win an Oscar for Best Picture. I will gladly volunteer to be the actor. I am very fit for just such a part: I can eat loads and loads of stuff (without getting fat) and I look very cute. I am also very obedient, so I will do anything the director tells me (concerning eating, that is). So, Disney, when you start making plans for this picture: please cast me! I will be a star actor, I promise. Maybe we will even win an Oscar for Best Dog in a Leading Role!
A great thing about France is they make a lot of cheese. A happy thing for me, because I am a big fan of cheese. Today we passed a farm where you can buy a local cheese, made from goat’s milk. I don’t like goats, they are always so haughty, think they are the smartest in the universe (not – actually, they are enormously stupid). But their cheese is great. We had a nice long walk through the woods and this is where we saw the cheese sign:
It is nice here, with all the different smells and sounds in these hills – there is a river here that makes a lot of noise, M says it is called the Tarn. By the way, what do you think of my walking gear? Impressive, isn’t it? In matching colors!
Anyway, this is the cheese. It is nice, too bad it is so small and M only bought one of them (sometimes she can be such a tightwad). Next time, she should buy at least a dozen:
