Exciting walk

We made an exciting walk today. It was warm and sunny, nice weather for a walk. Although I think any weather is good for a walk, it is just great to be outdoors. We went to the dunes and the beach!

I did some good running and swam to cool down. When we walked back through the dunes we encountered some wildlife! This is me, spotting it:

Okay, it was not really wildlife, but it was roaming free so I considered it wildlife. And a suitable prey.

Unfortunately the feline just stayed there, watching me. That is not supposed to happen. They ought to run, so I can chase them! So when M insisted that I walked on with her, I did. Next time I hope it will run away from me.

Lessons from the shelter

The first four months of my live I lived in a shelter in Athens, Greece. Me and my brothers and sisters were brought there by a caring human, she had found us newborn and left alone. We struggled to survive and my brother and I succeeded – we were the thoughest of our litter. After four months my brother and I went to Holland, where we both got adopted.

In the shelter I lived in the puppy quarters. A fun place, you can imagine that! We played together for hours. We also played with the grown up dogs, I had some great friends there too. A lot of these older dogs had been stray dogs. They thought me some valuable lessons about living on the streets. When you live on the streets there is only one thing on your mind: survival. In orde to survive you need food and a safe place to sleep. Some of the former strays I met were masters in getting plenty of food. They taught me how it works. There are two rules: 1 – be polite, always and  2 – chase away any canine that comes close to you and your potential source of food.

Both lessons I incorporated, so they come natural to me now. I thought they might be handy, even though I never became a stray dog. I enhanced the first lesson: I am polite, which means I look eager but not too pushy and I keep my distance. It is important to find the right distance: not too close, but not too far away either. You need to be able to catch the food that is thrown to you:

I made some subtle improvements to the second lesson, too. I chase away competitors and I am very good at that:

Over time I developed new ways of getting yummy food. Like this:

Method 1

Can you see my tactics? I studied a long time on this one, to get it just right. I look longingly at the human, although what I really want lies in front of me. By not looking at this delicious piece of meat I tell the human: “You are the best human in the world! Do you love me as much as I love you? Please give me the meat!” It takes a lot of self control to do this, I can tell you. But it always works, the human I look so lovingly at will give me the delicious food as a reward.
Mind you: one can only use this specific method with humans one knows very well. Otherwise it will be counter productive, because it is a little bit intrusive.

Fox alert!

I like chasing birds and cats and little dogs, but most of all I like to chase foxes. I did it once. We were walking through a field and there it was, a slender fox, right in front of me. In cases like this I do not hesitate: I was off full speed immediately. The fox saw me too (they are not stupid, you know) and started to run towards some bushes. In order to get there, it had to cross the path where we were walking. I sensed where it was going and I raced towards the bushes too, intercepting the fox on his way there. I missed him by half a nose length – he escaped in the prickly bushes. Men, he was fast!

It was the best chase I ever had.

I would love to get another chance of hunting fox. So you can imagine I was thrilled when we were walking in the dunes and there it was, a big fat fox. Just sitting there, in the sunlight.

Fox alert

I smelled it and my muscles started to tense. It was pretty far away and there was a hollow with some prickly bushes between us, so I had to think up a clever plan in order to make this hunt succeed. Then the fox did this:

Long walk 4

He arched his back to shit! This was a great opportunity for me, the moment to start the chase. You see: when one defecates, one is temporarily focussed on just that. One can not run and defecate at the same time. Every dog knows this. This was my chance to get close to the fox, he would never be able to outrun me.

But to my great misfortune M had me on a leash and would not let me go. I couldn’t believe she did not let me, I still can’t believe it. This could have been my one and only chance to chase a fox again! I am depressed, really depressed.

Four day hike

We just returned from a great Adventure. We hiked for four days in the hills of (M tells me) Germany! It was awesome. There were lots of pretty paths.

M and P were happy and so was I. I ran over the hills.

We walked through fields…

And forests….

Eifel6

And more fields….

Eifel8

There was a field that was extremely smelly – it was full of shit! Manure, M tells me it is called. I crashed trough it. Great!

Eifel7

We visited nice little towns, too. There we took small breaks. It is important to rest after and during activities, you know.

Eifel10

We slept in places like this:

Eifel11

Pretty, hey? I slept next to P. Cosy.

It wasn’t all easy, though. I had to do a lot of guarding, scanning the surroundings to make sure we were safe:

Eifel3

We encountered some wildlife. I chased a lot of mice, a fox and a hare. I could have caught them easily, of course. But in the end I let them all escape, because I was in a peaceful mood. I just liked to chase them.

Eifel15

We encountered some strange animals, too. I found them quite disturbing because they did not behave like they should – they came to me, instead of running from me. I wasn’t too sure what to think of them. Happily there was a solid fence that protected us from these beasts.

Eifel16

M tells me we walked 65 kilometers, but I don’t know what that means. I can tell we walked all day and my muscles got even stronger. Good. It was fun!

Now I need to sleep. Goodnight!
