Priorities

Sometimes I really do not understand humans. For instance: they seem to sort their priorities in the wrong way. I thought priorities were the same for humans, dogs and all other animals alike:

1. Food

2. Shelter

3. Happiness

The first two are straightforward, you can direct all your energy to obtain those two. When you have them, you can go to number 3: happiness. I think happiness is the same for humans and dogs, too: being healthy, feeling energetic, being with the ones you love, enjoying the warmth of the sun, being outdoors, feeling connected. We all like that, it makes us happy.

So why is it that humans do so many other things, stuff they do not really like, when they already fulfilled the three top priorities? Take M and P. We have a nice and warm house and food every day. They look happy to me, most of the time. Of course, one has to invest in keeping food, shelter and happiness, so that takes some time. However, they spend lots of time on things that do not contribute to obtaining food, shelter or happiness. They sit behind these luminous devices for hours and hours every day and talk into these black boxes. They fuss about catching the train to get to their appointments on time. All these things have nothing to do with obtaining food, shelter or happiness. So why do they do it?

It would be so much better for them if they would take me as an example. We could have a big breakfast, go out together (the three of us) and when we are back home again we could sleep in the sun. When we wake up, we have some snacks, another nice walk and play and then we can snooze again. That would be nice!

M tells me sometimes there are conflicting priorities and you have to sort them out. I understand that, we dogs have this too. For instance when we are out fetching balls and another dog wants to play with us. Like this:

Priorities

Then we decide what to do: continue to gnaw on the ball, or play with the other dog. We take this decision in a nanosecond. We dogs are very good at quickly sorting our priorities, getting them right. I think humans can learn a lot from us.

Private beach

I hardly ever do this:

Private beach

Lie down on the beach, I mean. But today it was so quiet, M and I had the beach all for ourselves! I had to experience what it is like, to lie down on a private beach. I know my friend from Switzerland, Hubert, has his own private beach in Saint Tropez, so I was wondering what it feels like. Apart from kind of cold (but maybe that is different in Saint Tropez) I thought it nice, but also a bit lonely. Happily M had this device with her, so I could run very fast to fetch the ball. But it is nicer to run with other dogs and fetch their balls.

Device

I must admit I was very lazy this week. I felt a bit moody and not like doing anything. Of course I had to go out with M or P, they need their exercise. They even go out when it is raining – I don’t know why. I told them time and again we can stay indoors when it is pouring, like it did a lot this week, but they do not seem to understand. Maybe they like walking in the rain.

Today it is a sunny day and we just returned from the beach. M and I walked a long way and I drained all the laziness from my long limbs by running ultrafast. M brought this magical device with her:

When she has this with her, her arms get tremendously strong and she throws the ball very very far! I like that. I wait for her to throw it and then I run like hell, looking up to the sky where the ball is going. Usually I catch it before it hits the ground. When I am doing this, I do not want to play or sniff the sand, I even run past little crabs (although I remember where they are, so I can eat them along the way when I run back to M).

So I had a good time on the beach. Besides from fetching the ball I met a friend, his name is Luca. I like playing with him, although sometimes he is a bit pushy. In that case I show my teeth and he backs off. I also met Lana, a former stray dog from Spain. We always measure forces when we meet. Today we found out we are both still strong. After this I ran some more.

Running

Now we are home again. I will rest in the sun and enjoy the feeling that my laziness left me.

Play

I love to play. Dogs play a lot together. We like it rough, so sometimes humans think we are fighting, as I explained in this blog. This is because when we play we have fun but we measure forces, too.

We also like to play with our humans. In a way this is measuring forces, for instance when we play tug of war. In this game we test how strong you are! Dogs play tug of war together too, you know. When I was little, I really liked to tug at a large stick held by a strong dog. Preferably a German Shepherd or a Rottweiler, because they are such a good sport. Of course I was not strong enough to carry this stick on my own, but that was not the point. The point was that these large dogs got very distressed, they wanted to snap at me but they could not, because then they would have to drop the stick. So in the end I would tug at the stick and they would hold the other end of it, growling and looking bewildered because this puppy tried to challenge them. Nice game.

There are some special games we only do with humans and these games are just for fun. I play a lot with M and P. For instance they hide some doggy snacks in an egg carton and I have to get the snacks out (easy). Or they hide something in the house and I have to find it. When it is on the floor I bring it back to them, when it is on a table or something I point my nose towards it, for them to see it. Actually it is a silly game, because why should I help them finding something they hid it in the first place… but well, we like playing together.

Of course we do ball games and a lot of other fun stuff, too. M managed to take a picture of one of my favorite games. Do you know what it is? Dancing!

Girl friend

I told you earlier I have one human friend, his name is Mats. But it turns out I have a girl friend too!!! Her name is Karin and she is the niece of M and P. She lives in the United States and she came visiting us the past days. We did all kind of wonderful things together.

We went to the beach! We shared my cargobike for this:

We went to the beach together twice, even in the storm yesterday. We ran together and bounced a lot and she threw balls for me. And we did not stop playing when we got home, oh no! She kept on playing with me, from the time she woke up until she went to bed. It was very, very nice. M told us we are two little bouncing balls and that is true!

Karin will be returning to the States in a couple of days, she told me. That is too bad – she does not have her own dog there, only a troop of cats! Anyway, I hope she will visit us again soon. I am a very happy dog now, because I have a boy friend and a girl friend!

Black box

Right. There is something I would like to ask you, my human readers. When we go out, we meet other people with their dogs. A lot of them, however, don’t pay any attention to their dog, but are looking at a strange black box. Sometimes they even talk to it. And no, they don’t appear crazy to me, at least, not all of them.

I do not understand. What can be more important than sniffing the day and enjoying the weather? Their dogs don’t always seem to mind, because without the attention they can do anything they like. Sniffing very long at a certain shrub or staring rudely at another dog, for instance.

But to be honest: this is not a satisfying way to go out with your human. We dogs like the companionship of other dogs, but we like to be with humans, too. Especially with the human we live with. And not only to be with him/her, but to go out together, to have Adventures together.  A dog can have a very strong bond with its human and it is the most wonderful thing in the world. Me, for instance, I will do anything for M: I will protect her and bring her back stupid balls because she likes to throw them and find her pizza if she is hungry (although she never asked me, so until now I ate them all myself). She will protect me, give me food and shelter and a soft bed. We are buddies. That is what this dog-human-relationship-thing is for.

Right?

Throw ball!

I am very relieved. Yesterday Cesar Millan’s show was in Amsterdam and we did not go. Mr. Millan must have told M the show was booked, as I asked him! Thank you, mr. Millan! I will be forever grateful. Because now we went to do fun things this weekend.

We went to a campsite in the woods, with our campervan, and stayed the night. It was very nice: quiet and sunny and with lots of interesting smells. Just outside the terrain the ground was all messed up, burrowed by something that smelled like wild boar. It was mouth watering!

We took some long walks and, the best part of it, P threw balls for me. He threw very far, so I had to run very fast. This is us, playing:
