Wander weekend

I had a great weekend. We went camping, M and I!

We wandered in the woods and followed all kinds of small paths. When we did not know which way to go, we chose the path that smelled the most inviting.

We had Adventures along the way, too. We encountered a herd of enormous beasts! Some of them were pitch black and looked very impressive. We made a little detour, of course, what do you expect? It is the only sensible way to do when one encounters beasts. Especially when they come in a herd.

After this I had to be extra alert, in case we would encounter more of them…

Happily, we did not. From then on everything was peaceful and quiet in the woods.

In the night, M and I slept cosily together in the bed. At home I have my own beds, but in the campervan we share. We nestle close together under the blanket, so we both stay warm.

In the morning we had pancakes and coffee! Well, just pancakes for me, M still won’t give me coffee. I don’t know why, it would surely help with my morning temper. It does with M’s…

After breakfast we waited for the rain to stop.

Then we went wandering again. We went through rough grassy land…

And along broad avenues lined with ancient trees.

When we broke up and drove away I thought we were going home, but M had a surprise for me. We stopped at the home of my boy-friend! It was great to see him.

You can imagine I had a grand weekend. We wandered through the woods, explored grassy lands, escaped a herd of dangerous beasts, ate pancakes and slept in one warm bed and on top of all that I played and cuddled with my friend. I am one happy dog.

Feeling sad?

Here in Holland the days are getting darker. The trees are becoming more bare every day and the air smells of earth and the decay of leaves. I don’t mind but a lot of people do, I have noticed. They are becoming sad or even suffer from something that is called sad: seasonal affective disorder. Do you wonder how I know that long and difficult word? Well, I read a lot when I am home alone. That is how I got to know the definition of sad – the disease, I mean. Not the feeling. I like being alone now and then. That probably makes me a not so average dog but hey, that’s me!

People suffering from sad are a bit depressed. They are tired and irritated by small things. They are vulnerable to little annoying illnesses, like a cold. That is all too bad, because there are some easy and natural remedies to get over this sadness. I think that in this case, too, humans can learn a lot from us dogs. We are never really sad. You want to know why? Here are some simple cures for sadness:

1. Sleep more. Take notice of what we do when it is dark and raining outside. We curl up in a nice and cosy place and we sleep. When we wake up and it is still dark and raining, we sleep some more.

2. Go out and exercise. No, this is not contradictory to number 1. It is complementary! We go out and run and play and when we are tired we sleep. Being outdoor and exercising is combining two important remedies for sadness. You soak up whatever light and sunshine there is and you use your body. That makes you feel good. Even when it is cold and cloudy outside. Just try it, for at least one hour! You will feel much better afterwards.

3. Do doga. Which is more exercise, but indoors so you can do it anytime, day or night. Doga is three things combined: moving your body, soothing your mind and having a good time with your canine. Don’t take it too seriously (you are not training for a doga contest, I hope), but laugh and have fun! It will melt your sadness away. Then, after doga, rest some more, if possible together.

Life is good, even when the days are getting darker.

Beach play

I had a great morning. The sun was shining, it was as warm as springtime. Although of course it is autumn, the air smells of old leaves and earth.

We went to the beach and P and M threw ball for me. My favorite ball, the one with a hole in the middle. Great for catching.

I am not only the fastest dog on the beach; I can jump pretty high, too. I just stretch my long body and push myself with my hind legs, up.  Easy.
